Hollencrest Middle School

Core Curriculum

Our students come to us at all different learning stages—advanced, struggling, and at grade level. At HMS, we understand the need for individual education roadmaps. In response, our teachers deliver and design different and engaging approaches to instruction. We encourage each of our students to strive towards their personal best, stay focused, and meet academic goals.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Our ELA teachers work to ensure that our students meet grade level standards in alignment with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. We offer quality curriculum and lessons, build on existing knowledge, and support the skills students need to succeed in college and career. We use Glencoe Literature/California Treasures as our text, which you can access online (see the left column for codes).

Math

HMS offers mathematics courses that are designed to make math meaningful in our students’ lives. We use hands-on learning and digital resources to keep our students excited about math.

Offerings include:

  • 6th Grade - Common Core State Standards
  • 7th Grade - Common Core State Standards
  • 7th Grade - CCSS — Enhanced Math
  • 8th Grade - Common Core State Standards
  • 8th Grade - CCSS — Integrated Math

Physical Education

Our physical education offerings focus on fitness activities and team sports. We address health and wellness, sportsmanship, skills development, and conflict resolution. We work closely with students to ensure that they are prepared to meet state fitness expectations and testing. We also help our students find lifetime fitness opportunities that are fun and enjoyable!

Science

Our science department offers earth science, life science, and physical science in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, respectively. Our lessons and activities are rich in inquiry activities, experiments, and hands-on learning. We use these opportunities to help our students relate science to everyday life and to appreciate the importance of scientists and their discoveries.

Social Science

We learn from the past, live in the present, and plan for the future! That’s the motto of our social science department, which is made up of educators who are really excited about what they teach. The course outline includes 6th grade ancient civilizations, 7th grade medieval history, and 8th grade United States history.
